Matsumoto Modern
Parts of “Matsumoto Modern” course works
Instructed by Prof. Kelley Murphy
Fall 2022
The works include drawings and physical modeling for research of Kelly Residence by Japanese-American architect George Matsumoto.

Kelly Residence was designed by Matsumoto in 1952 in Southern Pines, NC. The house has two rectangular parts with concrete and wood as structural materials. It accommodated a core family conforming to the context of post-war America. The elements, such as exposed beams and transoms, resemble Japanese vernacular architecture elements, but Matsumoto expanded their function for an American lifestyle, showcasing an expression and resilience of Japanese American culture.
